The history of Sonoma's wines dates back to 1812 when Russian colonists established Fort Ross along the Pacific coast and began planting grapes. In 1823, Spanish Franciscan monks planted thousands of grapevines at the Mission San Francisco Solano, marking the beginning of viticulture in the area.

Geographical Location

Sonoma is located in Northern California, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of San Francisco. The region covers about 1,800 square miles (4,700 square kilometers), which is twice the size of Napa Valley and one of California's largest wine-producing regions.
